There are a lot of things that are really not worth it in this life.. 
 
When I say a lot of things, I mean a whole lot of things..
 
And these things are what human beings spend their whole life doing…
 
Which is very wrong..
 
An example is someone just learning copywriting…
 
You really shouldn’t be obsessed with the writing part of this thing yet..
 
It’s truly not necessary for now…
 
Instead, you should be obsessed with tweaking emotions to work in your favor..
 
Because truth be told, everybody can write and write well..
 
So your obsession should be towards research.. 
 
Towards knowing what make people tick..
 
What makes people take action..
 
Getting in the thought process of the legends..
 
Thinking like a crazy mad man (that’s what they call “real” copywriters by the way)
 
And trust me, these alone will put you way above others..
 
And don’t get me wrong about writing.
 
You should write to get good with your craft too but that’s really not the main thing yet…
 
You see, one thing I do with anybody that want to be my mentee now is simple..
 
Give them something very very simple to write on..
 
And if they start with writing immediately, I know we have a lot of unlearning to do..
 
But you see those that go online to research, I know these ones will catch up in no time..
 
Mainly because copywriting is about emotions..
 
I was in this trap too sometime ago..
 
I don’t do research..
 
I just start writing like crazy..
 
And the results? Yeah you guessed right..
 
So I know I am doing something very wrong.. 
 
And that pushed me to get a mentor..
 
And this man has been my bedrock in copywriting since then..
 
He told me I need to understand the market I am selling too before writing a single word…
 
But not in just some broad, bland sense…
 
I need to get inside the prospect’s mind…
 
To learn how they think…how they act…how they talk…
 
And I need to mentally become the prospect while I was writing (empathy)…
 
Otherwise my copy would never truly connect with them.
 
He said that is just one aspect of research…
 
But there is even more.
 
Because in terms of research…
 
I also need to understand what solutions for the prospect’s pain point already existed…
 
And what the prospect liked, and hated, about those existing solutions…
 
Otherwise I’d never be able to differentiate between the product I was selling…
 
And what the prospect had used in the past.
 
And in total, he gave me a list of 15 research questions that I need to answer anytime I wanna write a copy…
 
And he told me that when it comes to finding the answers to those questions…
 
There were really only two places that I needed to go (others are bonuses):
 
Forums and Amazon.
 
Forums are amazing because they let you “spy” in on private conversations that your prospects are having…
 
You get to hear their stories, learn their struggles, and discover their hopes and dreams…
 
Plus, you get to know their language patterns and see how they think and talk.
 
Reddit, Quora, Nairaland are examples of a Forum…
 
Meanwhile with Amazon…
 
That’s really all about product differentiation.
 
The best way to use Amazon for research…
 
Is to do a search for products that solve the same pain point as what you’re selling….
 
Then, for each of the most popular products…
 
Go through the 4, 3, 2 Star Reviews..
 
To see what your prospects loves about them, and what they hate.
 
And he told me more and more..
 
But you can’t expect me to start divulging all those information yeah?
 
Exactly..
 
So research is really the bedrock of everything you want to do..
 
Even as a business owner, you don’t want to import a new product without conducting research about it…
 
Information marketer? You don’t want to create a course without conducting research on it..
 
Service provider? You don’t even want to send a pitch without conducting research about your ideal client.. 
 
Because if you don’t conduct research, your pitch will sleep in the DM like others..
